Mediterranean Sea Cruising
The Mediterranean sea is a sea near the Atlantic and is surrounded by so-called Mediterranean countries – South European, North African and the countries of the Middle East. Among major littoral cities you can visit on your cruising are Valencia, Barcelona, Marseille, Tunis, Palermo, Athens, Antalya and others. The biggest Islands are: Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, Corsica, Crete, Evia, Majorca, Lesvos, Rhodes, Chios, Kefalonia and Corfu. The sea is nearly landlocked and covers an approximate area of 2.5 million km2. The connection with the Atlantic Ocean(by the Strait of Gibraltar) is only 14 kilometres wide. The coastline is 46,000 kilometres long. Man-made Suez Canal connects the sea to the Red Sea.
Because of narrow connection to the Atlantic, tides are very limited. Evaporation is a lot stronger then precipitation in the Mediterranean. That goes especially for the eastern half of the Sea. Cool and low salinity water is pushed from the Atlantic eastward around the Mediterranean. Then it circulates and grows in salinity, until it’s pushed back into the Atlantic. Climate is characterized by hot and dry summers and wet winters.
